Mage + Ranger is actually a fantastic combo. Rangers tank FINE for exp content, especially when leveling up to 80. At the present time, a ranger can tank almost identically to a tank merc. Pick up the easy augs you find along the way, however don't go out of your way to pick up others. The bonus that they give you for your gear is minor compared to the rest of your gear nowadays. When you're 85, go ahead and camp yourself a decent set. Either way though, they're just not going to help...
