It depends on how you play really.

If you raid primarily, I'd focus on personal dps first, then pet dps, then pet defensive.
If you are primarily a solo player, go pet defensive, then pet dps, then personal dps.

I'd stick with the 71 air pet imo. I've never really used the monster summoning pets at all except when I got my first one because I thought it was neat to see a zone mob as pet..Air pets are monsters and I think majority of mages prefer air pets over anyother pets,though I see some use fire from ...
