You need faction with the pirates there to have the 70+ spells available to purchase (and the higher the level, the more faction you need). It's way easier to just research the spell or have it researched for you.

I don't mind pet losing gear after death, especially since they already come with summoned armor and you get at least 3 sets of usable weapons per summon. I really would like it to remember you pet toggle states though.

Yeah, the fire elemental was the worst part of the 1.5 just because he has a ton of HP and is very resistant. I think I just threw short duration DSes on my pet to do damage since that can't be resisted, but my merc did go OOM just as the fight ended even on efficient.
