I've been playing this a bit ever since I left EQ a few months ago.

As an old school EQ player, it definitely has a different feel to me. I've been told it plays very similar to WoW which I can't speak from personal experience really since I only briefly dabbled in WoW during Beta/Vanilla.

It does not feel like a game t hat has a lot of long term life. It definitely does not have the "epic" feel that a game like EQ has. You can sort of tell the game was probably produced on a small budget. The world is pretty tiny, they reuse lower level content for high level content (I've been told WoW does this also), and the world just didn't feel like it has much "life".

That being said, it is fairly entertaining if you're looking for something to do. I like the role system and being able to change what I do on the fly. I actually end up playing my Chloromancer/Warlock build (healer) more than any of my DPS builds in groups. Yes, mages can heal in this game. One of the big things about the class and role system is that the classes aren't stuck doing one thing. Warriors can tank and DPS. Clerics can heal, tank, and DPS. Rogues can tank and DPS and have the Bard role for support. Mages can heal, DPS, and have the Archon class for buffs/debuffs.

I've been out of EQ for about 6 months and played this during a free friends and family free trial invite period. I have to say I was quite impressed. I play on a laptop which was top of the line... 3 years ago. However this game still runs well and looks pretty good, but I can't crank the graphics up too far. I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic events, though they're not really THAT dynamic. It seemed to me that I encountered many of the same events at the same times in the same places. Still, it was pretty cool.

I also was a huge fan of their class system. Instead of having to roll up 4 characters and level them independently to suit my mood for the day I could just switch out soul trees. Brilliant!

If I could just pay the subscription fee and not had to purchase the game as well I probably would have signed up, but I didn't feel like dropping $50 plus the $15 a month. I've tried many MMOs over the years, and this and EVE are the only games that I've enjoyed on nearly the same level as EQ.

This is my first post since joining the site.
Please don't consider this a troll post.

I quit playing EQ1 a few years ago, mainly because my guild emptied out its
raid team in less than 3 months through retiring. We lost 40ish of our core
raiders. I didn't last long after that - played off and on until finally quitting
with over 9 years total entitlement time.

Looks like I am coming back to EQ1.
Playing on a TLP server has made the come back great fun.

I have played Rift since Beta 4 up until about 3 weeks ago.

Here's my experience.
Without going into pages of detail......

The game actually is awesome.
Gotta love the class system.
Probably the best made game in this genre out there right now.
Best made game, not best game content.

Which gets to why I am back at EQ1.

I only have 2 big issues with Rift.
1) You level WAY too fast. Boom you are at level 50.
That is the minor issue, but it compounds the big issue.

2) Lack of content. You hit 50 like a rocket -- without an explosion. It
all pretty much falls flat after that. From there on you spend a ton of
time looking for stuff to do - sad to say.
Oh, there is stuff to do, yes, but a person gets to the point they cannot
endure any more time wasted running around chasing rifts, working
on faction, finding collectibles, completing achievements, and LFG for
the few dungeons available. Trades don't count as they max VERY fast.
Realistically, those 5 things are what you will spend most of your time
doing at 50.
Sure, you can get into a raiding guild, but there are very few raids in
game currently so you will still spend most of your time doing the
other 5 things.
There are also the zone events, but they are just a harder form of rift
event.

Ya, ya, those 5 things can be a lot to do.
Ya, ya, you can possibly condense EQ1 stuff into 5 things also.
Just try doing those 5 things in Rift for 2 months straight.
You will understand what I mean when I say there is a lack of content.

Now, when Rift gets more content it will be a fantastic game.
Until then I have to play something else.
