2. LOVE YOUR PETS

Part 2 of the pet stuff  The Samanna link is not available anymore (or I couldn't find it) but the site is back with a new URL, which is very good news, one of the best EQ web resources ever : http://www.shamanscrucible.com/forum/

2. LOVE YOUR PET

Love your pet, give it equipment. Summoned pet weapons suck until PoP, but give your pet stun whips (Gnoll Hide Lariats) from Splitpaw, they sell relatively cheap on any progression server. It will help with pet survivability and it will increase pet aggro. If you are rich and higher level, you can give your pet any type of 1 handed Ykesha proc weapon. The stun effect is much shorter than on the stun whips, but it affects mobs > level 55, therefore interrupting casting.

Remember that level, class and race restrictions do not apply to pets in regard of equipping a weapon, only the level requirement for procs apply. Of course, you cannot give your pet a no drop weapon. More on this at sammanna, a must-read.

AC and hps are the two most important things you'll look at when equipping your pet. I have a SK alt who became a smith just to forge full fine plate sets for Adon's pets. And my enchanter became a jeweler to make ac/hp earring, ring and necklace she offers graciously to Adon's pets. Of course do not bother over-equipping a pet while leveling as you'll kill it anyhow, but give it at least the stun whips once in your 30s. STA has no effect on pets, only flat +hp values do.

Know how pets favor items : pets look only at AC values for armor and delay values for weapons. If you gave your pet an AC 9 +1000 hp breastplate (theoretically speaking), it will replace it with an AC 10 +0 hp breastplate any time and you won't be able to force it to equip the +1000 hp one. At least, pets now hand you the item back when refusing it, they don't eat items anymore.

Last, but not least, once you have passed your 20s, keep your lowest level pet heal spell (Renew Elements) memorized to cure the pet when it is hit by a dot or a debuff which has a counter. Until Luclin and "real" pet heals, the purpose of the pet heal spells is to cure the pet, not to heal it. You are in Sebilis and that pesky enchanter frog tashed your pet ? Renew Elements and tash is gone. A necromancer mob dots your pet and its life starts dropping like crazy ? Renew Elements can cure most dots as long they have a poison, disease or curse counter. Renew Elements removes 10 counters in each of the three categories, it's pretty powerful.
