Rethinking now I remember what has solved the issues for windows 7 users ... me included. I had similar issues and finally solved it. Rightclick your Icon where you start EQ with and set Compatibilitymode to Win XP SP2. That what solved for most. I for myself had to set to XP SP3 compatibility mode and don't have this freezes anymore.
Its just the graphic-engine freezing not the game itself. You can notice when you are autofollowing while it happens. "Viewport" will be frozen but char still autofollows fine on the map of the other groupmember and in reallity.
Those threads on the sonyboards are from late summer last year if I remember well, you might will have to dig for them.
I have both on my PC: compatibility mode XP + Background FPS to 20 and had never this problems anymore since. Worth to give it a try.
