I personally still think that Fire pet is the best DPS, but only when it is in melee range and you don't have a bard / aren't using FBO. The issue with parsing it on dummies is that you have to malo the dummies for the fire pet's spell to hit for full every single time. The spell it casts is 3500 DPS by itself. I fail to see how the fire pet, with its 1200 max hit, is <50% of the earth pet's melee DPS. It only needs to get around 2.5-3k DPS melee to beat the water pet. In my experience, things die faster with the fire pet.

Thanks! This helps. I'm working on grinding out the basic caster stuff for my Mage and got pet affinity to make buffing a little easier and have the pet benefit from Bard songs. After that, I've been just doing the basics... SCM, crits, etc. then on to pet stuff.
My necro really came into his own at about 600 AA, so I picture it to be the same with the mage. Grinding out the AA is a little tedious to make the Mage viable but it's fun, powerful class already. I take him soloing once in a while to learn the ins and outs of the class and not depend on the group. Great times.

I'm at 4400 aa's, max pet aa's, And I agree... The fire pet kicks butt. It's also an aggro machine! and a great puller in open areas.
Tanks T1 RoF easily, too. If you're not getting adds

While it's true that the fire pet does really good dps, in groups the tank has to know where to place mob to get the best out of it and when soloing .... well we shouldn't talk about fire pet for soloing (at least not since lvl 49). The fire pet gets chewed to shreds by 1 HoT T1 mob solo.
It might do okay molo'ing, but who wastes experience sharing with a merc anyway.

Something I haven't tried (still level 97 so no new fire pet yet) but am going to try eventually.....solo with the fire pet but chain gargs on a mob and see how it works. Has anybody tried this yet? If so how did it go? If nobody has tried it yet I'll give it a whirl in a couple weeks.

You may have an aggro problem. The nuke is not low-aggro.
The nice thing about the air pet, is the stuns extend the tanking-life of your servants. Give the air pet aggro-reduction swords, and your first 2 Lvl 100 servants will hold aggro over him until Most T2 RoF mobs are dead.

the OP needs suggestions for mid 80's pets. By the time he hits 95+ he'll know the mage class as well as the rest of us.

the sad truth about a mage is we're most fun when the group is dead. expect to have opportunities to solo as long as ya play him, even if ya dont start out that way.

I was leveling my paladin in Katta Kastrum, he just sat there leached xp while I went to town with my bard. I was still getting LB xp so it wasn't all bad. I loved the non-stop pace and that I could send an RS (GoM proc) to tank and kill the next "spot" while my pet and I took on 4 mobs. Each mob died in 8 seconds. It felt like I was commanding 2 permanent pets! It took 1 hour to completely drain my mana pool.
Good times.
