Spell Line ups

Post by Pencodil »

Greetings All! I have some basic questions around mage spells and am just looking to get some reccomendations. I have been playing EQ for years but just recently rolled up a new mage and boxed him up to level 85 so needless to say I am not a good magician at this point! I have read most of the resources on this site which are excellent by the way but I just need to have a basic spell line up for an 85th level mage that most generally groups. I assume the air pet is the one that I should be using and I need to summon weapons and armor but beyond that I need to know which spells are best for the pet and which ones need to be loaded all the time.

Or might there be a spell line up matrix somewhere that I have overlooked that lists different line ups for different situations kind of like smanna does for the Shamman trade?

Any and all advice is welcomed.

I like to also have Burning Pyroshroud in my line up for group play, tanks on raids usually have too many buffs and not enough slots anyway. Pyroshroud is a defensive proc that adds some dps, which can crit btw, and helps keep aggro on the tank. Castable on your pet too.

You should always have burnout and iceflame buffs on your pet, but they don't need to be memmed all the time. One of my spellslots I kind of rotate between iceflame, DS and burnout, whichever is going to expire next.

Usually I go with

Shock of Discordant Steel
Fickle Blaze
Bolt
Malo
Rampy
Exchangeable, normally pet promised heal when I solo or with merc, in groups this is the spot for our rod. On Raids, here be my jolt.
Twincast
Iceflame. On Raids, here be Rod,
DS
Exchangeable, usually pet conversion or Burning Pyroshroud. Rarely Aegis

For Summoned/Constructs i swap the first two spells for SoF AtA and SoD AtA. Occassionally, if I need some more ouch, ill swap Shock for SoF bolt. Or for fire resistant mobs, i swap Fickle for SoF shock.

Raid:

RS
Jolt
Bolt
Fickle
Heal
Promised
Aegis
Modrod
Symbiosis
Twincast

Solo:

RS
Heal
Bolt
Fickle
DS
Promised
Aegis
Mod
Symbiosis
Twincast

For summoned fights (raid and group) I replace AtA as the first nuke, moving jolt and bolt down in raid, and just bolt down in solo settings. The reason for the specific order is because of multibinding.

Because we are farming MMM right now, my raid spell line up looks like this:

RbS
Jolt
Fickle
Bolt
AtA
AtU
Twincast
Symbiosis
Aura

I only keep the heals up when I'm soloing.
Also I cast 3 sets of rods before each named fight, so no one should ever ask me for a rod during a fight. I never keep that memmed.
Also, you general purpose pet is air of course, but for raids, especially if you corner tank mobs you'll get more out of water. And then occasionally you'll want to use fire. It's been a long time since I've used an earth pet.

Wow, am I the only one who has their nukes in the 7-8-9-0 slots?

This is very disconcerting :(

I do that to. My reasoning is that I hardly every ALT+# my nukes, as I map them to the "x" key. I do, however, ALT+# other spells (Twincast, Servant, etc), and it's a lot easier to do that if they're in gems 1 and 2.
