Can the pet tank with melee toons?

I've been trying to switch away from a merc to using my pet to tank - he's great except whenever there is any character in melee range the mob will ignore the pet and beat on the toon. Is there any way to get the mob to focus on my pet even when other melee toons are in range? At first I just thought it was my earth pet causing a root-aggro issue but even the air pet has this happen.

I browsed throught he forums and couldn't find a quick answer - apologies for my mage-newbiness!

No. Any PC within range will always, always hop to the top of agro and steal it from your pet.

This is why you don't see many mage/rogue box combos.

I have boxed my rogue with my mage...of course all the rogue does in that case is unlock the odd door and autofire range stuff hehe...

I can't tell you how many times I was soloing/boxing and random non-tank melee class X would ask to join and I'd have to explain why they couldn't join me.

You could let them have some OJT too if they don't believe you.
