While much of the music in the 80's is currently being laughed at by pundits and critics alike, there were some gems.
What I want to know is this: We currently revere the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, many many others too numerous to count, and the music they made in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Out of the current crop of "musicians", who are we going to remember 20, 30, or 40 years from now? Lady Gaga? Justin Bieber? Brittney Spears? Jay-Z? Black Eyed Peas?
Who currently will be the revered musical icon of THIS generation, the one or two remembered, beloved, and still relevant?
Nobody.

I had this really smurf awesome quote by RFK, but because we are only allowed 255 characters, I can't put it up here, so I am writing this in protest of a stupid smurf limitation.

"We're on a road to nowhere!
Come on inside!
Takin' my ride to nowhere!
HA! Come on inside!"
can still remember those lyrics 25 years later!

While I agree there were some great songs to come out of the 80s, we have the benefit of hindsight now. At the time people were saying the same thing: 80s music is rubbish! Give me the good stuff from the 60s and 70s! It's like sifting: you throw a bunch of crap in the pan and then over time the drudge washes away and you're left with the good stuff.
There is good stuff being made now. You just won't find most of it on most pop channels. Muse, The Decemberists, Spoon, The Killers, Metric... a few modern bands that I do like. I don't listen to much modern music, but I always try to keep an ear out for new stuff. Of course I also have some guilty pleasure bands that I readily acknowledge are musically rubbish but I like them anyway *coughKillHannahcough*.

I'm by no means implying they are great, or even really good, or anything other than laughable, and while I really would drink a gallon of her piss just to lick where it came from, I have to say that I like Fergie and Black Eyed Peas. I constantly find myself humming along or tapping my foot to it.

We should make a guilty musical pleasures thread.
