Pet Armor

I have a few questions about pet armor that I hope you all can help me with

I am using the level 71 pet, with the Summoner's Earring from the vendor in PoK. My understanding from reading this board is that he comes already equipped with armor. If I give him prime plate, does that upgrade his armor? I was wondering because I had given him 2 weapons and when I gave him a third, the weapons in his hands did not change. Does the armor he is summoned with come with a belt? How about the jewelry slots and the haste mask? How about the 76 pet, which I will have pretty soon?

I used to read about mages giving their pets defiant gear and such, too, but you don't see many people posting that any more, so I was just wondering. I often just self-buff my current pet for grouping or soloing and keep my completely tanked-out air pet in suspension, especially since I duo with a crazy necro a lot and my pet tends to die quite a bit ;p

and yes, our pets will equip defiant armor. However you do need to keep the required/recommended level in mind regarding the pets and armor. Pets will upgrade gear based on AC. Keep this in mind when you do upgrade it because it will equip a 18AC 0HP item over a 17AC 500HP item.

The rule of thumb I use to keep it simple when explaining this: a focused pet from TSS (71-75) comes only with phantom armor; everything beyond that comes with everything for that pet's era but weapons. A pet's era is TSS if 71-75, SoF 76-80, etc. I am not sure why the TSS pets got crappy armor but it's better than nothing, especially since the armor spell was hella rare when TSS was current.
