Epic 2.5

I've seen this around a few places ... is there a 2.5 epic now?

Epic 2.5 was part of the Depths of Dark Hollow expansion. If you have an epic 2.0 from Omens, you can upgrade to 2.5 with a drop from Demi-Plane of Blood. The drop for mages (and all other int casters) comes from a specific event (Tris Wallow?), you then speak to someone and the drop becomes an augment for your epic 2.0.

It should be noted the "augment" is an invisible slot 30. Meaning it won't take the slot 8 you've got for regular augments on the epic itself.
