I haven't claimed this yet. Should I? Are there any issues I should know about regarding familiars and pets?

The issues with familiars and pets seem to be resolved. If you have a pet up, you will just get the buff. If not you will get the familiar as well, but you can just hit "go away" and you will keep the buff.

So our pets no longer poof whenever the familiar buff fades or is clicked off?

They are fixed. You can use familiars without fear of losing your pet.
