Pyrilen Skin

Post by fordse »

This spell seems rather useful, so I want to make sure I understand it.

I can cast this on my pet, as many times as my mana allows, and the four or five mobs attacking him take 420 damage each, every time they hit him??

Also, is Burning Aura the same kind of thing, a sometimes-firing DS?

And if so, do these stack?

Thanks!

You have it right except for one minor detail: there is a 4 hit limit on the spell. So even though it has a 3 tick duration, if fluffy gets hit 4 times the spell expires. The only real use this spell has is against super resistant mobs, since DS damage is unresistable.

Burning Aura is much more useful. It's not unresistable like pyrilen skin, but it does have a resist modifer (-100), goes off pretty often, and lasts much longer than pyrilen skin. It does have a hit limit as well, but it's much higher (240 hits), so it will usually last it's full duration if you're just fighting singles. Against many mobs it will run out much faster. Great spell to try and keep up at all times on fluffy or your tank. Very good damage to mana ratio.

Back when killing Trakanon was a big deal or soloing in Kod`Taz was a big deal I would use the Pyr Skin line quite a bit. Continuous casts for Trak and chaining pets in Kod`Taz.

Also back when whatsisname in Anguish wasn't able to be hit by fire other guild Mages and I would chain skins.

The Hungry Flames line is a pseudo-replacement that won't hit your pet. (Don't bother).

Burning Aura line is great.

Thanks very much, everyone! I think I'll focus on the Burning Aura line.

On a side note, speaking of soloing Kod'Taz, I'm trying that right now cuz it's a hot zone, and...I can't get past the first couple mobs. Is there a secret to this? (I'm 67, btw.)

If you just want to run by them, lev, invis and run as high up on the walls as you can. Doing that you should be able to travel most of the zone as long as you pay attention when crossing over gaps. It's easy to be too low or miss a see-invis that is too close, when we were raiding Ikki and Yxxta back in the day there always seemed to be someone running for the zoneline with a train dogging their heals.

Ok, Soloing in Kod`Taz.

Run over to "Right Field". That is, invis, get high on the wall, turn right, and hug the wall back into the area where those indifferent MOBs are.

Keep an Earth Pet mem'd. Obviously you have one already made, in your pocket, buffed, Pyrelin'd , DS'd, Pyro'd (when 68) and ready to go.

Send your pet in. He'll get chewed quickly but that is OK because just as he is ready to die you have already started to grab your suspended minion. Just as he is ready to pop out, say /pet get lost to get the current (dying) one dead. The MOB is probably rooted since you're using Earth, and you'll send the next one in and Skin and Pyro him.

As he's ready to die, start to summon another pet. Just as the cast bar is almost done, do another /pet get lost so the new pet pops out just as the old one poofs from your command.

That's pet chaining in a nutshell. Old style. These days with Mercs maybe you can do without that. But it's fun. =) You should try it just to try it. Getting that timing down may end up helping you in a pinch someday.

Oh man...chain petting. I have done a couple times only. It's definitely...exciting :). I don't have Suspend; but, I'll try it anyway. Do u use Earth for the hps? Would a clr merc make wind viable?

Well, I don't know how mercs would work at that level since they weren't around when I did that.

But I used Earth for the Root. I also made sure the mob was mal-debuffed at the get-go so that root would stick. I wanted him to stand there while I was pulling up the next pet.
