Be nice if it were, but 600 mana just not enough to make it happen. So other thoughts, like an upgraded hulking body guard possible, but as hulking works fine the way it is I don't see that as a possibility. If a level increase for sure but without one, no I doubt it, as they could just up the hit points on the existing line if they may die to quickly in new expansion.
So that leaves us with a new pet, 600 mana is more then we currently pay for a new pet, but if it is significantly better it maybe worth it, though my thought is a new pet would cost the same mana as the existing ones. So that leaves me to think possibly a 'new' type of pet. Unlike an RS pet that can enrage and off tank, this maybe a short duration DPS only pet. Would be perfect for raids, where the pet won't get hit and to increase mage dps using a pet, and being 600 mana may be a way for the devs to say see you don't need more mana regen. Just a thought but possible. Now this pet may also have very low aggro so as not to pull it off your normal pet like a proc of concussion/jolt etc... lowers it own aggro.
This may make sense, it would be a high DPS/damage pet, low mana cost as it is not made to off tank, you would need the normal RS pet at a huge mana cost for that. So mage DPS goes up using this pet and at 600 mana it is cheap enough to use all the time.
As I said this is all speculation but if this is close to it (or if not if a dev reads this, please think about this idea), then this maybe an ideal short duration pet to get. High DPS, low mana cost, low aggro, and melee attack instead of spells on resistant mobs. I like the idea, and it fits the mage class perfectly. If it is this kind of pet and it stays for the full 30 seconds we can chain these, of course the duration maybe shorter, but that is up to them.
So more speculation but if an earth type pet would it root or would they give it a snare proc (we can dream right) or no proc. In any event this would be my choice for a new line of pets to compliment the RS pet. RS our off tanking pet, this new one is our DPS pet, and our normal pet is the backbone of the mage class.

See, the 600 mana is why I think that it could be an offtank pet similar to the RS. I remember in the dodh beta when they made the RS, they said that their intention with the RS was to have it a DPS pet, and that the offtanking was an afterthought. We're the ones that started using the RS as offtanks and it was never originally intended to be used as an offtank, but they had no problems with us using it in that fashion.
Because it's only 600 mana, they could possibly have it be a temporary pet that's instead of high dmg low agro like you were suggesting, it would have
high agro, low damage to justify the 600 mana cost. And it could possibly have hps similar to the RS, but isntead of having only 150ac like all the RS have which basicaly makes most mobs almost always hit for max, it could have a large amount of ac (similar to the earth pet) to be a proper offtank. Of course this is just my own mind speculating a cool additional temp pet. Wire could be right about the persistent effect making it not work to be a summoned pet, but I still don't believe that "There's nothing to indicate this has anything to do with Magicians". Again, just my opinion.
